This painting of Dal Lake and the Himalayan foothills beyond is set in early evening, the golden hour, at a place where the intricate labyrinthine backwaters meet the open expanse of Dal Lake.

Up until the late 80s most heavygoods travelled by local shikara. By the turn of the century these boats and a traditional way of life had all but disappeared.
