Troubled Water was painted in 1996 from material gathered from the last visit before the political unrest broke out in 1989. Tourism dried up and by the turn of the century the cargo boats and their people had disappeared. Military curfews and blockades hastened the demise of this traditional way of life. 

The seductive tranquility of the scene is counter balanced by the gathering storm in the mountains beyond.
